Knoll x Supreme Leopard Model B3 Wassily lounge chair, Marcel Breuer, 1925, 2019.

Inspired by the frame of a bicycle and influenced by the constructivist theories of the De Stjil movement, Marcel Breuer was still an apprentice at the Bauhaus when he reduced the classic club

chair to its elemental lines and planes, forever changing the course of furniture design.

This chair was revolutionary in the use of the materials (bent tubular steel and, originally, eisengarn) and methods of manufacturing. In 1925 Breuer purchased his first bicycle and he was impressed with the lightness of its tubular steel frame. This inspired him to experiment with using the material in furniture design. The design (and all subsequent steel tubing furniture) was technologically feasible only because the German steel manufacturer Mannesmann had recently perfected a process for making seamless steel tubing. Previously, steel tubing had a welded seam, which would collapse when the tubing was bent.

The Supreme Wassily Chair was the fashion brand’s first foray into furniture. It is symbolic of the Bauhaus art movement, but with a brazenly modern modification, with its wild leopard print of its Spinneybeck® hide leather, a signature motif of sorts for Supreme, only adding to the chair’s allure. Handmade in the USA exclusively for Supreme. Produced in very limited number, Fall WInter 2019. Was available on December 5, 2019 and sold out rapidly. Impressed manufacturer's mark to frame ‘KnollStudio Marcel Breuer’. Printed manufacturer's mark to seat ‘Supreme’.
