Gli Abiti Sofa (1984) by Gianfranco Ferre for B&B Italia in Red Wool

7,350.00

A seminal moment in design history occurred in 1984, when Piero Busnelli, founder of B&B Italia commissioned a fashion designer, Ferré to create a seating collection alongside Nava. Busnelli was trying to cash in on the global success of Italian fashion in the 1980’s. To do so, he hired a fashion designer to design furniture. This sort of thing was just not done prior to Ferré’s season at B&B Italia. Yet it paved the way for what would become a major design trend — the fashion design crossover.

Ferré’s collection was titled Gli Abiti, “The Clothes,” and was in production for an extremely short period of time. It featured a slip on system for easy on and off fittings of outfits for each piece. The loveseat currently wears its cherry red winter wool outfit.

Ferré, who passed in 2007, had received a degree in architecture at the Politecnico di Milano (university) in 1969, designed his first collection for women in 1978 and his first men’s collection in 1982. Right off the bat he became known as the architect of fashion, famous for his emphasis on seams, elaborate construction, careful tailoring and overall austerity. Have included som ephotos of his designs for his 1983/1984 collections for context.

Don’t miss this iconic piece of design history!
